Grape nut: 5 Questions With Colin Hofer, Bonhomme Hospitality Director of Wine & Education and big time nature-lover
WHY WINE FOR YOU?
It's an amalgamation of interests, life events and dumb luck. I grew up in a farming community and my parents tend an impressive garden and small persimmon farm. My relationship with the natural world has always been strong, and my career in wine and restaurants is a continuation of that. Restaurants, especially fine dining, give these beautiful ingredients and beverages a stage to show off. Plus, I've always loved traveling and have a good head for geography. Wine has encouraged those interests and allows me to continue to travel in my mind and palate to these amazing regions all over the world.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love the "aha" moments I get to participate in. Sometimes you can see an idea really take hold and click in a person, whether that's training staff about certain aspects of viticulture (grape growing) or sharing with guests certain decisions a winemaker has made which they will be able to taste. I love to share the knowledge I have and hopefully enhance someone's experience.
WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT IN THE WINE INDUSTRY?
I'm excited about Millennials and Gen Z'ers becoming the largest consumers in the wine market. Hopefully, it will disrupt brand loyalty and eliminate the perception of wine being an exclusive drink for the upper class instead of just fermented grape juice.
WHAT MIGHT SURPRISE PEOPLE ABOUT YOU?
I was homeschooled until 6th grade, and I don't really enjoy watching TV.
IF YOU WERE A WINE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE?
Central Coast California Chardonnay. Those grapes have a nice view.
